Flower gardens should be a thing that brings you happiness and fun and most of all, enjoyment. A flower garden does not have to be anything awe-inspiring, although that is nice too. What it should be is a reflection of what you like and who you are. If you are happy with it and having a great time puttering about then you have a great flower garden already. The last thing any hobby should do is put additional stress on you.

Decide where your flower garden should be located and don’t put it too far away fro the house. If you do this, it will not be enjoyed as much by you and you will begin to find reasons not to visit your garden. It also needs to be close by for easier maintenance and watering. Once you have the site picked out , before it’s definite, make sure that you are getting at least 6 hours of sunshine on that area, 8 is better , but 6 will work.

Prepare your soil, turn it over and loosen it to about a foot deep. Take a soil sample to your county extension office and they will tell you what if any additives are needed.

The best soil for a flower garden is loamy soil, but you can mix topsoil or humus into sand or heavy clay soil and this will make these soils better for your flowering plants. Always work in some slow release fertilizer, this will add nutrition to your plants while they are growing.

If you are fairly new to flower growing don’t select things like peonies and roses at first, these plants have very specific requirements and can often prove quite difficult to grow successfully by novices. You can choose to start your garden with seeds or established plants or seedlings. Established plants will be the most expensive, but they give you an automatic garden, instant gratification.

Some easy plants to grow are herbs, bee balm, lilies and Sweet William any of these will work nicely together because they all have similar requirements. These plants require sun and water, but do fine should either be in short supply. You don’t want to mix plants in the same area that have different requirements for watering, and you don’t want to mix shade loving plants with the sun bunnies either.

Flowers look best when grouped in odd numbers like 3 or 5, and you should choose colors that look good together and remember that a simple color combination often looks better than a huge variety of thrown together colors.
